Additional Information

Your immune system has an enormously important job. Put simply, the immune system is in charge of identifying and neutralizing potentially harmful substances or cellular changes (e.g., cancer cell growth) within your body. Some of the most common external threats include bacteria and viruses that can be caught if your immune system is compromised. As you grow older your body develops antibodies to adapt to all of the various threats that are seeking to exploit its weaknesses.

Your body regulates immune system processes through various organs located in different parts of the body, including bone marrow, tonsils, lymph nodes, adenoids and the spleen, among others. This complex system of organs and specialized cells requires a delicate balance to maintain its effectiveness. Additionally, your immune system’s effectiveness at fighting intruders is helped when other organs are also working properly as a first line of defense for filtering harmful substances. These organs include your lungs and skin.

There are specific ways that your immune system can be compromised, though it’s usually a combination of factors that result in getting sick. Some of the threats to your immune system can be controlled (e.g., exposure to other sick individuals) while others cannot, including if you have a preexisting autoimmune disorder like Epstein-Barr.

Immune compromise is often the result of external factors like high levels of stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, inconsistent sleep patterns, and inordinate exposure to immune-weakening substances. Immune deficiencies can also be inherited, and thus require extra attention to keep an effective and properly operating immune system.

Some common signs of a compromised immune system include a constant feeling of tiredness, digestive problems, continual sickness and the presence of a fever (which is a normal immune response to the presence of a virus or bacteria).

Making intentional choices about your diet, exercise and stress-management habits is the best way to support your immune system health. Because modern diets often lack a proper balance of nutritional elements like key vitamins and minerals, dietary supplements and probiotics can be very helpful in balancing your body’s precisely tuned systems. This is particularly true for vitamins and minerals that play key roles in maintaining digestive health and essential regulatory functions, including zinc, selenium, iron, copper, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, C, and E.

It’s also helpful to avoid substances that are known to be toxic and detrimental to immune system health, including smoking and alcohol. Regular exercise and sleep are crucial to helping your body rest, recover and maintain healthy defenses.

It’s important to remember that your immune system relies on an interconnected network of organs and functions within your body. Damaging or failing to care for one part of this system might cause other parts to fail, weakening the total immune system.
